Week of February 4, 2013
Students will take interactive notes on the PowerPoint regarding text structures.  Students will classify various text structures in functional text samples. Students will also take notes on a Functional Text PowerPoint regarding the various types of functional text and their purposes.
Week of February 11, 2013
Students will also analyze a college application for overall clarity based upon patterns of organization, hierarchical structures, and repetition of key ideas, syntax, and word choice. Students will also complete the application to give them real-world experience since they are about to become high school seniors. Students will also view several want ads, and evaluate the ads for overall clarity based upon patterns of organization, hierarchical structures, and repetition of key ideas, syntax, and word choice. Students will be given the task to research and find a want ad for a job they would like to have as a first post high school position. Students will also create a greeting card as an example of short functional text
Week of February 18, 2013
Students will take notes on the teacher presented PowerPoint regarding resumes and cover letters. Using the want ad the students were assigned to bring in from the previous week, students will write a resume and cover letter for their prospective job utilizing the material presented in the PowerPoint presentation.
Week of February 25, 2013
In cooperative groups, students will invent a product that teens of today couldn’t live without.  They will draw a diagram of their invention, labeling important components. Students will also need to create an owner’s manual with a set of clear and concise directions.  The project will have a rubric and groups must present their invention. The Students must remember what patterns of organization, hierarchical structures, repetition of key ideas, syntax, and word choice influences the clarity and understandability of functional text that they have seen throughout this unit.

Guided Practice
Teacher will model how to assess and analyze how patterns of organization, hierarchical structures, and repetition of key ideas, syntax, and word choice influence the clarity and understandability of functional text. Teacher will also model how to write a resume and cover letter. Students will be encouraged to actively engage in discussions, generate clarifying questions, and direct their mastery of functional text through creative opportunities.
Comprehension Check
The students’ comprehension will be assessed through the successful completion of the analysis of how patterns of organization, hierarchical structures, and repetition of key ideas, syntax, and word choice influence the clarity and understandability of functional text, and successful completion of performance tasks.
Active Participation
·         All Students
·         All the Time
All students will be active learners and have a role in the successful mastery of this skill through individual note taking, discussion, observing teacher modeling, processing/meeting rubric requirements, and successful completion of activities.

Students will answer the following essential questions:
Part A:
1. What is organization? How does the author apply organizational technique to produce clarity within functional text?
2. What is a hierarchical structure? How does the author apply different types of hierarchical structures techniques to produce clarity within functional text?
3. What is repetition of key ideas? How does the author apply repetition techniques to produce clarity within functional text?
4. What is syntax? How does the author apply syntax technique to produce clarity within functional text?
5. What is word choice? How does the author apply word choice techniques to produce clarity within functional text?
Part B:
Students will write a paragraph explaining the importance of patterns of organization, hierarchical structures, repetition of key ideas, syntax, and word choice influence when trying to understand and efficiently utilize functional text.

Independent Practice
Students will take interactive notes, analyze various pieces of functional text, complete applications-resumes-and cover letters, and complete a functional text project.

*Students will read a class novel and partake on various curricular assignments, both reviewing and previewing language arts standards; concomitantly, with the above essential standard.

This should be 2 pages in length, with at least 4 direct quotations.
Example: According to the World Wildlife Association, “tundra inhabitants typically write better research reports” (World Wildlife Association 2012).

II. Research the following information for each animal.  Be sure to explain the reasons for the evolutionary change.  Each animal section should be a minimum of 1.5 pages.

                a. physical changes
                b. habitat changes
                c. dietary changes
                d. mating and parenting changes
                e. population changes
                f. behavioral changes
(Incorporate at least 3 in-text citations per each animal section)
