Junior and Senior Assignments for the week of November 3, 2014





Seniors

Monday- Students will complete their journal and ACT prep the first ten minutes of class. Teacher will pass out Handout 1and 2 for Brave New World, and then the class will read chapter 1, beginning a dialectical journal and answering chapter 1 comprehension questions.

Tuesday- Students will read the first ten minutes of class.  The class will read chapter 2 of Brave New World, continuing their dialectical journal and answering chapter 2 comprehension questions.

Wednesday- Students will complete their journal the first ten minutes of class.  The class will read chapter 3 of Brave New World, continuing their dialectical journal and answering chapter 3 comprehension questions.

Thursday- Students will read the first ten minutes of class.  The class will read chapter 4-5 of Brave New World, continuing their dialectical journal and answering chapter 4-5 comprehension questions.

Monday- Students will complete their journal and ACT prep the first ten minutes of class. Students will complete the Investigative Reporting Handout regarding the Puritan era by researching questions on Handout 2, and presenting their findings to the class. 


Tuesday- Students will read the first ten minutes of class.  As a class, students will complete handouts 3-4, which introduces students to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s contemporary style of writing found in The Scarlet Letter. 

Wednesday- Students will complete their journal the first ten minutes of class. Students will be introduced to the symbolism found in The Scarlet Letter by completing Handout 5, “What Does a Symbol Mean?”  Students will then be given the format for their ongoing character and symbol analysis during the course of the reading of The Scarlet Letter. 

Thursday- Students will read the first ten minutes of class.  Students will read chapters 1 and 2 of The Scarlet Letter, completing the symbol and character analysis in their journal.  Chapter 1 and  2 character will be Hester, and the symbol will be the scaffolding.

Junior and Senior Assignments for the Week of October 20-23, 2014




Seniors

Monday- Students will complete their journal and ACT prep the first ten minutes of class. Students will receive a list of 2014 Arizona political candidates and an IPAD, so they can research one candidate and prepare a five-paragraph persuasive essay supporting that candidate. Each supporting paragraph must contain at least 2 pieces of cited textual evidence providing support for their claim. A title page and reference page will also be required.

Tuesday- Students will read the first ten minutes of class.  Students will finish their persuasive political essay.

Wednesday- Students will complete their journal the first ten minutes of class.  Students will be placed in cooperative groups, select one candidate, and create a multimedia political ad that will be shown to the class on Monday October 27th.

Thursday- Students will read the first ten minutes of class.  Students will continue to work on their multimedia political ads. Project will be due Monday, October 27th. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!

Juniors

Monday- Students will complete their journal and ACT prep the first ten minutes of class. Students will watch and take notes on how to write a satire.  The video can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuvjDK3mpA0. After viewing the video, students will write a 200 word satire and share with cooperative groups.


Tuesday- Students will read the first ten minutes of class.  Students will write the definition for Satire, Parody, and Caricature in their journal.  Then, in cooperative groups, students will analyze two different political cartoons noting insightful observations and syntactical elements such as rhetoric, tone, word choice, exaggeration, etc.  Students will then review an editorial discussing the subject matter of the political cartoon and notice the differences in tone and focus of the piece.

Wednesday- Students will complete their journal the first ten minutes of class. Students will be introduced to the Satire Movie Project by watching last year’s class Satire on Immigration.  Students will then be placed in groups, given a Satire Focus Handout, and time to complete the handout, which is designed to map out their entire theatrical satire.

Thursday- Students will read the first ten minutes of class.  Students will be given time to continue working on their Satire, which will be due Monday, October 27th. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!
